Telegram has introduced the Desktop app for Mac users so you can use it like you do on your phones. The Telegram Desktop app gives you access to different features such as creating a channel or creating custom mute durations for individual contacts. You can also start making video calls to your contacts on your desktop.
Sometimes the video call feature may stop working properly in the Telegram Desktop app on your Mac. And you cannot connect with your contacts. If you are having trouble, here are the best fixes for Telegram Desktop video calls not working on Mac.
1. Switch to a 5 GHz frequency band
Starting with the basics, you need to check if your Mac and phone are connected to a strong Wi-Fi network. If you are using a dual-band router, we suggest switching to a 5 GHz frequency band to enjoy faster internet speeds. You can also perform a speed test to make sure your ISP isn’t experiencing downtime or undergoing maintenance in your area.
2. Check microphone and camera settings
Next, you’ll need to take a look at the call settings in the Telegram Desktop app on your Mac. If your internet connection is strong and stable, there may be issues with your Mac’s microphone or webcam settings. Here is how to check the same.
Step 1: Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search, type Telegram, and press Return.
2nd step: Click the Settings icon at the bottom right of the left menu.
Step 3: Click General.
Step 4: On the right side, scroll down and click Call Settings.
Step 5: Under Camera, click Default.
Step 6: Select FaceTime HD Camera.
Step 6: Under Microphone, click Default.
Step 7: Select MacBook Air Microphone (according to your Mac model name).
Go back to the Messages tab and check if the issue is resolved.
3. Check if your contact has allowed video calls
If you still can’t make Telegram video calls on your Mac, your contact may have video calls restricted from you and other contacts. Telegram lets you restrict voice calls and voice messages as part of its privacy settings. Here is how you can check whether you have restricted the contact or not for video calls on Telegram.
Step 1: Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search, type Telegram, and press Return.
2nd step: Click the Settings icon at the bottom right of the left menu.
Step 3: Click Privacy & Security in the Settings menu.
Step 4: Under Privacy, click Calls on the right side.
Step 5: Check if you have allowed your contact’s video calls.
Step 6: If you want to remove the video call restriction for a contact, click Never allow under “Who can call me”.
Step 7: Click Edit in the upper right corner.
Step 8: Click the Minus icon next to the contact’s name.
Step 9: Click Done in the upper right corner to confirm.
Go back to the Messages tab and try making a video call.
4. Force quit and restart the Telegram app
The next solution we recommend is to force stop and restart Telegram on your Mac. If you’ve kept the app active on your Mac for a while now, force quitting will give it a fresh start. It also helps to fix many software related issues on Mac.
Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner.
2nd step: Select Force Quit from the list of options.
Step 3: Select Telegram in the Force Quit window and click Force Quit.
Step 4: Relaunch the Telegram app and check if the issue is resolved.
5. Update the Telegram app
If none of the solutions work, we recommend updating the version of Telegram on your Mac. The current version may be buggy and cause such issues with video calls.
Step 1: Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search, type app store, and press Return.
2nd step: Click Updates in the left menu.
Step 3: Press Command + R to refresh available updates.
Step 4: If there is an update for Telegram, download and install it.
Step 5: Once the installation is complete, close the App Store and open Telegram to check if the issue is resolved.
