In 2018, Google acquired Tenor, a GIF platform available on PC and mobile devices. The goal was initially to strengthen its Images service, but now another Google service has added a new integration with Tenor.
The company announced that Google Chat now has built-in GIF search and insertion capabilities, courtesy of Tenor. GIFs are available on Chat for the web, and there’s an easy way to add one to your post.
In the Chat compose bar, you will now see an icon for GIF. When you click on it, a maximized window will appear with a search bar to find a GIF that best expresses what you think. Alternatively, you can choose GIFs from the various hashtag categories arranged online just below the search bar. These include “Trends” as the default tab along with 14 other topics.
This is a better option for inserting GIFs into your post instead of manually uploading an image in many use cases. Admins can configure the new feature starting today before it rolls out to all Chat users starting September 15. This new feature will be enabled by default for everyone, although admins can always disable it. Finding and inserting GIFs will only be available for Google Workspace customers as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers.
