Among the many cross-platform messaging apps available, Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps, which offers tons of features, not only for communicating with people you know, but also for chatting, without affecting your productivity. Not always, but sometimes you may need to send someone a chat, or you want to keep the chat history with yourself for your future reference. Taking screenshots of a cat might seem like the easiest option, but you are well aware of how easily things can go wrong with an increasing number of screenshots containing the messages. So, it’s worth it to find another way.
On most cross-platform messaging apps, you can export a chat history to a file, so you can open it later to view messages or to share the same with someone. As for Telegram, you can also export one or more chats to a file. It’s not complicated, but the only thing you’ll need is the desktop version of Telegram. So far, I haven’t found the ability to export individual chats to Telegram using the Android Telegram or Telegram X app. Well, the nature of the Telegram Desktop app is one. of the main reasons why I love Telegram so much, and there is no reason you shouldn’t install it on your computer.
Save chats in Telegram app
So, without further ado, let’s get started with how to export individual chats from Telegram desktop app.
Open the Telegram desktop app and therefore open the chat you want to export.
Option to export chat history to Telegram
Click on the three-dot menu, then click ‘Export chat history‘.
Export chat media files
Now, besides texts, you can optionally export photos, videos, stickers, voicemails, video messages, files, GIFs and everything in between. You can set the minimum and maximum size of the exported chat history to 1 MB Where 1500 MB respectively, and the limit of 8 MB will be set by default. Among other parameters, you can change the path to export the chat, by clicking on ‘Download path‘, and choose only the messages to export, between two selected dates, by clicking on’ the oldest message ‘and’ present ‘.
By default, all messages will be exported. Finally, click on ‘Export’.
View my data
Now you will be shown the export details, which included the total number of exported files and the total size. You can click on ‘View my data‘to take you directly to the folder, where the chat is exported, or you can just exit the window.
Telegram chat history files
In the folder you can find a file with the name ‘messages.html‘which will show you the full chat history.
In the other folders, you can find the photos, stickers, videos and other items present in the chat.
The folder will usually come with the name ‘ChatExport_DD_MM_YYYY‘followed by a number to avoid duplicate folder names if you are exporting multiple individual chats back to back.
Unlike other chat apps, the chat history feels intuitive and tidy after the export process is complete, which is definitely cool. The files and other media will also be displayed in the web page, and the images, files, videos and other items are clickable so that you can open them in a new tab or download each of the individual files.
