The Telegram secure messaging app is now back in the Apple App Store, having been temporarily removed by Apple.

The apps were removed by Apple at midnight CET (23:00 GMT) and Telegram CEO Pavel Durov confirmed on Twitter that the Telegram and Telegram X applications had been removed.

“We have been alerted by Apple that inappropriate content has been made available to our users and both apps have been removed from the App Store. Once we have the protections in place, we expect that. let the apps be back on the App Store, “he tweeted. Durov did not elaborate on the inappropriate content or the necessary protections.

Telegram X is a recently released alternative Telegram client, integrated with Swift, with faster and smoother animations, themes, and more efficient battery usage. The Android version of the Telegram app – which has over 100 million downloads – remained available for download from Google’s Play app store, as did Telegram X.

In a second tweet at 4 p.m. GMT, Durov said Telegram and Telegram X have now reappeared in Apple’s App Store.

“Telegram is back in the AppStore after having been away since midnight CET. Every day more than 500,000 users download Telegram for Android and around 100,000 other Telegram for iOS,” he said.

Telegram promotes itself as more secure than mainstream messaging systems like WhatsApp – for example, Telegram secret chats use end-to-end encryption, leave no traces on corporate servers, support self-destructing messages and do not authorize the transfer. . Additionally, secret chats are not part of the Telegram cloud and can only be accessed on their home devices. Messages in Secret Conversations use client-client encryption, while cloud conversations use client-server / server-client encryption and are stored encrypted in the Telegram cloud.

However, the app has drawn criticism from politicians, most recently British Prime Minister Theresa May, for allowing criminals and terrorists to communicate. Telegram has said it is blocking terrorist bots and channels (like those linked to Isis), but will not block anyone who peacefully expresses “alternative views.”

Apple had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
