JANE LEW – Thomas “Tom” Oswell Messenger, 80, of Jane Lew, passed away suddenly on Saturday August 28, 2021 at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.
He was born in Lewis County on August 25, 1941, the son of the late Lawrence Leo Messenger and Audrey Gladys Rogers Messenger. In addition to his parents, Tom was predeceased by a brother, Henry A. Messenger; one sister, Flora A. Turner and her husband, Denver; father and stepmother: Charles W. and Bertie N. Culver; and a brother-in-law, Charles R. Culver.
On July 7, 1963, Tom married the love of his life, Judith D. Culver. Together they have shared just over 58 wonderful years of marriage.
Tom is survived by his wife, Judith D. Messenger of Jane Lew; one daughter, Pamela J. Starling of Niceville, FL; one son, Toby T. Messenger of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandsons: Joshua L. Starling and his wife, Kattie, of Baker, FL, Cody A. Starling and his wife, Xzandria, of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Colin B. Messenger of Virginia Beach, VA; three great-grandchildren: Boston A. Cromer, Riley D. Starling and Quinn X. Starling; two brothers-in-law: John W. and Jeffery B. Culver; two sisters-in-law: Mattie L. Lambert and her husband, Carlon and Eloise Nunn; and several nieces and nephews.
Tom retired from the US Air Force in 1983 after serving for 22 years. He went to technical school and graduated as an electrician and heating / cooling technician. Additionally, at one point, Tom owned and operated his own lawn care business. Tom will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends.
Tom’s cremation request was honored at the on-site crematorium at Pat Boyle Funeral Home. A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
