Thanks to the Delta variant, we are seeing a spike in fake vaccine cards on the dark web black markets. Tap or click here to follow the Delta variant. When you buy a fake vaccination card, you expose yourself to a world of dangers. Of course, you can go to offices or other places that require vaccinations, but you can also find yourself in the back seat of a police car.
This is true for both buyers and sellers. The police recently arrested Illinois pharmacist Tangtang Zhao. They accused him of selling genuine COVID-19 vaccination cards the CDC sent him. He reportedly sold 134 cards to 11 buyers, making a profit of about $ 1,276 (or about $ 10 per card).
If found guilty, Zhao could spend up to 120 years in prison. Suffice it to say that these types of transactions are always risky and should be avoided. Read on to find out why buying a fake vaccination card is such a bad idea.
Here is the backstory
Cybersecurity firm Check Point Research has reported an increase in fake vaccination cards being sold on the Dark Web. They can be bought for as little as $ 100, they were going for $ 200 in March. Fake PCR tests and CDC, NHS and EU Digital COVID certificates are available for many countries including US, UK, Switzerland, Pakistan, Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Indonesia, France and Germany.
Check Point has seen a 257% increase in sellers of fake vaccination cards on Telegram since March. The number of followers of the group increased by 566% and totals in the millions.
The ads tout the freedom to work and travel and that its cards are registered and verified against the NHS, CDC and EDU databases.
Sellers can be contacted via Telegram, WhatsApp, Wickr, Jabber, or email. Payment can be made through PayPal and cryptocurrency including Bitcoin, Monero, Dogecoin, Litecoin and Ethereum and others.
Keep away from the dark
What is at stake here is not so much the decision to be vaccinated as to avoid commercial relations with sellers of this type. The Dark Web is a marketplace for illegal and dangerous commerce, including drugs, weapons, the exploitation of minors, and more. Many victims of data breaches also see their information sold there.
Beyond that, the penalties for it are quite severe. The Justice Department says distorting official government seals, including the CDC logo on vaccine cards, violates federal law. The violation could result in up to five years in prison or a fine of $ 5,000.
Federal authorities are watching the Dark Web, and you might be getting involved in something big unintentionally. Tap or click here to learn more about the dangers of fake vaccines sold online.
